Potsdam (dpa / bb) - Brandenburg wants to do more to protect the moors.

Teams of experts advise farms on the management of bogs in order to keep as much water as possible in the ground, the ministry said on Thursday.

7.2 million euros from the state's future investment fund are available for the so-called climate moor project.

It started last year and is expected to run until 2026.

"To this day, bogs are drained in many places so that they can be used for agriculture," said Environment Minister Axel Vogel (Greens) in the Emster-Gollwitz polder project area near Brandenburg an der Havel.

The negative consequences for the environment, climate and water balance are great, the damage to water and soil is irreversible.

The Ministry of the Environment is currently developing a peatland protection program to better protect peatlands from drying out.

Brandenburg is one of the most bog-rich federal states in Germany.
