The Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) is examining the dissertation of Chancellery Minister Helge Braun.

The CDU politician and doctor announced this on Wednesday evening on Twitter.

"I informed the public today that, at my request, @jlugiessen is checking the reference to a previous partial publication of the results of myself and other authors on my dissertation," wrote Braun.

The "Giessener Allgemeine Zeitung" had previously reported that a commission would examine the work of the politician in a standardized, multi-stage process.

Braun received his doctorate in medicine in 2007 after studying human medicine.

According to the report of the “Gießener Allgemeine”, the university received a reference to a possible violation of the university's regulations at the end of January.

The allegations therefore relate to the relationship between the dissertation from 2007 and a previously published publication with Braun as co-author, as well as possible overlaps with other writings.

"I am convinced of the scientific value of my work and of the medical knowledge gained through it," Braun told the newspaper. The university has already received his opinion. With a view to the review of the dissertation by the commission, he spoke of an "important work to ensure good scientific practice". His doctoral thesis was entitled “Influence of intraoperative tachycardias on the postoperative prognosis”. Tachycardia is the medical term for a racing heart.

Most recently, Federal Family Minister Franziska Giffey (SPD) was suspected of cheating on her doctoral thesis.

In autumn 2019, after allegations of plagiarism, the Free University of Berlin issued a complaint to Giffey for deficiencies in her dissertation, but did not withdraw her doctorate.

The complaint was withdrawn and a new investigation procedure was initiated.

The university's presidium has now received the report from the new review committee, the university announced on Wednesday.

Giffey was given four weeks to comment.
