Luxembourg (dpa / lrs) - Luxembourg Airport is renovating its only 4000 meter long runway.

The aim of the work this year and next is a complete renovation to the state of the art, announced the airport in Luxembourg on Wednesday.

This also includes new lighting with an LED system.

The work would not affect the flight plans, it said in a statement.

Because work is carried out from spring to autumn during the night flight ban between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.

"By working at night, the runway can be fully used during opening times."

The main work was due to start next week and was carried out in sections.

"In principle, we are building a new runway on top of the old one at night and at the same time keeping the only runway in our country open for all regular flight operations," it said.

No information was available on the costs.

In 2020 the airport counted 1.4 million passengers.

That was 68 percent less than in the non-Corona year 2019. The freight volume increased by six percent to more than 947,000 tons.
