Altentreptow (dpa) - In Altentreptow near Neubrandenburg a huge boulder is to be lifted today (8:00 a.m.). This is the 400-ton "Big Stone", as Karsten Schütz from the Geological State Office of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania told the German Press Agency. The natural monument is to be raised by 2.50 meters and will be a magnet for visitors. The action was initiated by the city council of Altentreptow. The giant boulder with the dimensions of a single-family house only rises up to about half of its height from the ground. The "Big Stone" is a granite and about eight meters long.

For the uplift, foundations were poured and a steel structure weighing tons was built on which two tear-resistant special straps hang, which were pulled through under the colossus. Hydraulic presses, which are otherwise used to raise bridges, should slowly lift the boulder and its construction. Two days were allotted for this. The stone is considered to be the second largest boulder of the northern ice ages on the German mainland.

According to Schütze, the largest boulder of the North German Ice Ages on land is the "Kleine Markgrafenstein" in Rauen, south of Berlin, with 180 cubic meters and a weight of 470 tons.

In third place is the “Old Swede”, which was recovered from the Elbe in Hamburg in 1999 and weighs 217 tons.

The Buskam off the coast of Rügen is considered to be the largest giant boulder, but it is located in the Baltic Sea and only protrudes superficially.

Its dimensions are given with a volume of 200 cubic meters and a weight of 550 tons.

A total of around 1.3 million euros are to flow into the beautification of the monastery park in Altentreptow.

Raising the boulder alone is expected to cost 244,000 euros.

The taxpayer association had criticized the increase as a "waste of taxpayers' money".
