Erfurt (dpa / th) - In the opinion of the Greens parliamentary group, cycle expressways are a good, but so far neglected instrument for creating attractive everyday connections for commuters.

In Thuringia, the construction of at least five such high-speed bicycle connections is an option, according to the study published in Erfurt on Wednesday, which the Greens parliamentary group commissioned from city and transport planner Martin Weidauer from the Erfurt University of Applied Sciences and Ingo Steckhan from the planning office VIA Cologne would have.

If the scientists and the Greens have their way, in-depth studies by the Free State should determine the feasibility of such cycle paths between Jena and Stadtroda (16 km), Saalfeld and Rudolstadt (9 km), and Erfurt and cities such as Weimar (22 km) and Arnstadt (19 km ) take a closer look. "Our goal is that Thuringia will also become a cycling country in everyday cycling," said the transport policy spokeswoman Laura Wahl.

If the goal set in the country's bicycle traffic concept of increasing the proportion of bicycle traffic from 7 to 15 percent by 2030 is to be achieved, considerably more efforts are required.

Despite the test contract in the Thuringian cycling concept and the provision of federal funds of 6.7 million euros exclusively for Thuringia, no initiatives by the Free State of Thuringia to implement high-speed cycling connections are recognizable, criticized the parliamentary group.

The Ministry of Transport said that this money has not yet been requested by the municipalities.

A study in cooperation with the Ilm district and a study by the Thuringia-wide working group “Bicycle-friendly municipalities” to examine the potential of such connections are already in the making.
