Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The climate foundation financed by the Nord Stream gas pipeline project has started work.

The Foundation for Climate and Environmental Protection MV will have at least one million euros available annually to finance projects, if the endowment only comes from Nord Stream, said the foundation's chairman, ex-Prime Minister Erwin Sellering (SPD), on Wednesday Schwerin.

"At the moment we have Nord Stream's commitment of two ten million euros to start," said Sellering.

The first ten million are there, the second is being discussed.

"And then two million a year for 20 years."

In addition to financing climate protection projects, the foundation's second task is to support the completion of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline - which is why it is controversial.

Sellering left open how exactly this support should be provided.
