Halle (dpa / sa) - The number of financially funded fertility treatments decreased in Saxony-Anhalt last year.

After funding for a total of 480 treatments had been approved in 2019, there were now 433, the state administration office in Halle announced on request.

124 permits had been granted by the end of April this year.

"A trend can currently not be read," said a spokeswoman.

"Although due to the corona pandemic in some cases no or fewer treatments were carried out this year, it is not foreseeable whether these will be made up for in the second half of the year."

In the 2019 calendar year, a total of just under 292,400 euros from federal and state funds were paid for the promotion of fertility treatments.

In the past year, the sum was according to the information at around 274 700 euros.

For the current year, 501,600 euros are available in the state budget.

Not all applications are approved. According to the information, 514 applications for funding were received in 2019, 88 of them from unmarried partnerships. Last year there were a total of 488 applications, 64 of them from unmarried couples. A same-sex couple was among them. The majority of the refusals result from the fact that the couples wanted treatment in a clinic outside of Saxony-Anhalt, although the state administration office did not see any objective reasons for this, it said.

The German IVF register had reported an increase of 9.3 percent in the number of treatments for 2020.

At a total of 113 reproductive medicine centers, 108,000 treatments had been started after a good 99,000 in the previous year.

2020 was a record year.

The evaluation also showed very clear regional differences.

Treatments based on in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) are supported.

Both are methods in which egg cells are fertilized outside the body and then inserted into the uterus.

The chances of getting pregnant in this way depend, among other things, on the woman's age and the number and quality of the transferred embryos.
