Erfurt (dpa / th) - The Thuringia Refugee Council has joined demands not to deport any more people to Afghanistan and to reassess the security situation in the country.

“Afghanistan is in free fall in terms of security,” the association announced in Erfurt on Tuesday.

The precarious security situation was further exacerbated by the withdrawal of NATO troops, which began on May 1.

Therefore, a nationwide ban on deportation to Afghanistan is necessary.

In addition, the Foreign Office must classify the country as consistently unsafe.

May 1st marks the official start of the withdrawal of international troops from Afghanistan. The approximately 10,000 remaining US and NATO soldiers, including around 1,100 from Germany, are due to leave the country by September 11th at the latest. In the meantime, a withdrawal by July 4th is also under discussion. The violence in the country continues despite ongoing peace talks between the militant Islamist Taliban and representatives of the Afghan Republic. At least 15 security forces were killed in several Taliban attacks in the west of the country on Monday.

Thuringia's Integration Minister Dirk Adams (Greens) had already spoken out in favor of a nationwide stop to deportations to Afghanistan with a view to the withdrawal of NATO troops.

From Thuringia itself, only dangerous and criminal offenders have been deported to Afghanistan for years.
