Kiel (dpa / lno) - The SPD has demanded more money from the state government for swimming lessons.

"Even before the outbreak of the corona pandemic, fewer and fewer children and young people in Schleswig-Holstein were able to swim safely," said SPD sports politician Kathrin Bockey of the German Press Agency.

For this reason, Bockey calls for financial support to sponsor public or private swimming pools in which school or extracurricular swimming lessons for children and adolescents or lifeguard training are offered.

In addition, it should be checked “to what extent the indoor swimming pool season can be extended parallel to the outdoor swimming pool season in order to be able to provide more swimming areas”.

The financial aid is intended to help the sponsors continue to operate their swimming pools despite the prohibition of general swimming in order to combat the corona pandemic.

"Due to the nationwide closure of swimming pools and the elimination of school and extracurricular swimming lessons, the situation is getting worse," emphasized the member of the state parliament.

While nationwide last year, according to figures from the German Life Rescue Society (DLRG), 378 people drowned in swimming accidents, nine percent less than in 2019, 25 people drowned in Schleswig-Holstein last year.

That was six more than in 2019.

For this reason, swimming lessons for children and young people and lifeguards must be made possible immediately across the country, said Bockey.

"This is all the more true since no increased risk of infection in swimming pools has so far been proven in compliance with hygiene regulations and protective measures."
