Skåne took the lead early on in odor training to restore the sense of smell and taste of covid-19 victims who lost it.

After many patients were allowed to come to Sus in Lund to do their exercises, Sus, together with Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, has produced a brochure for people all over Sweden to be able to smell smell at home.

- Those who come from other regions have often heard from them and said "Where should we turn?

We do not have these clinics nearby, ”says Charlotte Cervin-Hoberg.

Practice at home

The idea with the brochure is that it will be available digitally on 1177's website but also at health centers around the country.

- Then patients should be able to smell smell at home before going to a clinic and do an odor test or see a doctor.

Think of the scent

Odor training has existed before when it was something that affected people after colds and flu, but with the corona pandemic, more and more people have been affected by odor loss.

The training is that you should regularly and systematically smell the same things in order to train your sense of smell to feel the scents again.

- It helps to think about how you remember that something smelled, that you try to remember how, for example, coffee smelled when you could still feel it, says Charlotte Cervin-Hoberg.

Wait and see

How effective the method is against odor loss in covid-19 remains to be seen as it has not yet been so long since the first cases began with their odor training.

- There is also a spontaneous recovery that I experience is going slower now during the pandemic so you do not really dare say how long it can take to be recovered.
