Rothley (AP) - Before the missing Maddie turned 18, her parents still haven't given up hope of seeing their daughter again.

"We cling to the hope, how small she may be, that we will see Madeleine again," wrote Kate and Gerry McCann on their website.

Maddie McCann disappeared on May 3, 2007 while on family vacation in Portugal.

Since then, there has been no trace of the girl, who will turn 18 on May 12th.

A German suspect is in custody for rape in a prison in Lower Saxony.

"Every May is hard - a reminder of years gone by, of years together that were lost or stolen," the parents continued to write.

"This year it is particularly painful because we should celebrate Madeleine's 18th birthday."

The parents thanked the authorities for continuing the investigation despite the corona pandemic.

"As we have said many times, we need to know what happened to our wonderful daughter, whatever it is."
