Ence (Energía y Celulosa SA)
is the
leading European
company
in the production
of eucalyptus
cellulose
and the first Spanish company in the
production of renewable energy with agricultural and forestry biomass
.
A firm commitment to the bioeconomy and the circular economy that has made this company a national benchmark in both sectors.
Sustainability is one of its pillars in both aspects of its business
. The cellulose it produces is of natural origin, renewable, biodegradable and recyclable, which in many cases replaces other materials such as plastic and its derivatives. In this respect,
"Naturcell" stands out, the first unbleached cellulose product marketed by the company
and which has a considerably lower environmental footprint than standard pulp. Furthermore, its
biofactories in Pontevedra and Navia are energy self-sufficient
, taking advantage of the excess heat from production. In turn, with
the purchase of wood
in rural areas, these two plants inject some
200 million a year into emptied Spain.
Being faithful to its principles and thanks to the application of rigorous security protocols against Covid, ENCE has produced more than one
million tons of cellulose in 2020
, with an increase of more than 10% compared to 2019 and the intention to consolidate this trend in 2021.
Even so, they look to the future with the intention of continuing to strengthen their commitment to sustainability.
"Our plans go through growth and diversification to produce new types of cellulose
and special products that respond to the growing demand for cellulosic products and the current consumer trend towards more responsible and sustainable products," says
Jordi Aguiló, CEO of Cellulose from ENCE.
ENCE has also reflected this whole circular economy model in the other facet of its business. E
n biomass plants the commitment to efficiency and green technologies
is clear and thus have managed to
supply energy to 1.8 million people in 2020
to meet their domestic needs.
In turn, its plants have generated a total of 8,000 new jobs
, mainly in rural areas, to which it expects to add
4,000 more with its future projects in 2022.
"It is a renewable, manageable source that
does not depend on meteorological factors, which will allow, with its development, to serve as an emission-free alternative
to reduce dependence on fossil fuels", says
Felipe Torroba, CEO of ENCE Energía .
Photovoltaic plants
This boost to the use of agricultural and forestry residual biomass has much to do with the
decarbonization of the country's energy mix, providing circularity to its management, and, in addition, solving various environmental problems that this biomass represents in the field
.
Thus, their uncontrolled burning is avoided, the risk of forest fires is reduced, and value chains are built for their use and transport, generating employment and wealth in rural areas.
But biomass is not the only way that ENCE generates renewable energy. It has expanded its commitment to other production methods and has a series of projects in the pipeline that will allow it to
multiply its installed capacity 2.5 times as of 2022
. "We currently have a portfolio of
505 MW of mature projects
, with access to the network and locations secured or pending," explains Torroba. "
Of these, 240 MW correspond to photovoltaic projects
, and the rest to biomass generation projects."
Regarding the
main photovoltaic projects
, the
Andújar (Jaén) and Seville
plants should be highlighted
.
In biomass generation, the future 36 MW plant in El Ejido (Almería) can be highlighted, which will respond to the pressing problem of waste management of greenhouse crops.
Ence's commitment to sustainability is reinforced with the
ENCE Decalogue for the Sustainability of Biomass as Fuel
, which guarantees to all its stakeholders a sustainable use of biomass and permanent respect for natural resources.
