Copenhagen (AP) - Former Bundesliga coach Nikolaj Jacobsen is expected to lead the Danish national handball team until the 2025 World Cup.

The contract, which will run until 2024 anyway, was extended by an option for another year, as the Danish association announced on Tuesday.

“We are delighted that Nikolaj will be there as the Danish national coach at least until the 2025 World Cup in Denmark.

This is a gift for everyone in Danish handball, ”said sports director Morten Henriksen according to the association's announcement.

The 49-year-old Jacobsen took over the national team as a coach at the beginning of 2017, at that time he was initially still working as a Bundesliga coach at the Rhein-Neckar Löwen.

In 2019 and most recently in January 2021, he led the Danes to the world championship title.
