Leipzig (dpa) - Verdi expects strong headwinds in the upcoming collective bargaining round in retail and mail order in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.

The union does not rule out warning strikes.

"The first hints pointed to a complicated round," emphasized the Verdi negotiator, Jörg Lauenroth-Mago, on Tuesday.

The peace obligation ends at the end of May, the first strike actions are conceivable in June.

Verdi wants to go into the collective bargaining round for around 280,000 employees in the retail and mail order business in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia with a demand of 4.5 percent more wages and salaries.

In addition, there should be a supplement of 45 euros per month.

In addition, the union demands a minimum wage of 12.50 euros per hour.

The entire industry is booming, explained Lauenroth-Mago.

"In Saxony, sales rose by 7 percent in the previous year, in Saxony-Anhalt by 5 and in Thuringia by 4.8 percent."

The main beneficiaries are mail order and online retailers, grocery stores, hardware stores and furniture retailers.

"A good two thirds of retailers benefit from the increase in sales."

In contrast, the textile trade and the owner-managed company in the city center suffer if they have not developed online offers.

The collective agreement for around 280,000 retail employees in the three federal states was terminated on May 31.

Negotiations are expected to begin in the second half of May.

The employers had rejected the Verdi demand as "unrealistic".
