Schwerin (dpa / mv) - They are places of retreat, but they are also of great social, ecological and urban significance: allotment gardens are continuously promoted in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Environment Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) confirmed this when the allotment garden committee was advised on Tuesday.

The state supports the allotment garden system, among other things, with 90,000 euros annually for club houses, path construction and playgrounds, but also for public relations and training.

This funding has remained constant for years.

For two years now, the allotment garden associations have had additional funds at their disposal for the dismantling of asbestos-containing components of abandoned arbors.

According to the ministry, the state allotment garden committee is appointed by the minister in every electoral term.

It is composed of representatives of the parliamentary groups, representatives of regional politics and representatives of allotment gardeners.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania there are an estimated 80,000 allotment garden owners who are organized in around 1,000 associations and cultivate an area of around 3,700 hectares.
