The French Overseas Minister, Sebastien Lecornu announced at the end of March that he wanted a bill for Mayotte before the end of the five-year term.

The objective is to make up for delays in the development of the territory and to adapt the law to certain specificities of the department.

All the authorities of the island were gathered this morning in Mamoudzou to give the signal start to three weeks of consultations with the population of Mayotte.

With our correspondent in Mamoudzou,

Yoram Melloul

Fatima Ousséni comes out very happy from the launching seminar of the consultations.

For the Bâtonnière of the Bar of Mayotte, the government finally gives the floor to the population: “

I find that the ministerial initiative is very good, because consultation calls for an inventory.

Then it is also a direct dialogue with the population which feels considered, concerned.

It is a very good thing.

And if the government pays attention to us, we can't miss the boat.

 "

Take into account "

the real concerns of Mayotte

 "

Another participant in the debate in the great hall of the school of lights of Mamoudzou, the deputy Les Républicains, Mansour Kamardine. He emphasizes an excellent initiative on one condition: "

That it is not like the consultations that were made before." We have been consulted a lot. We have been listened to a lot. In fact we entertained the gallery, but without ever taking into account the real concerns of Mayotte. For 40 years the state has told us on its own, what is good for us.

"

On this point, the prefect Jean-François Colombet wants to be reassuring.

He is doing his utmost to involve the Mahorais in this future bill.

“

Any Mahorais who wants to either go to a citizen forum, where access is free, or participate in a free audience of the prefect, or tell his mayor I want you to bring such an idea in the citizen forums will be able to do so.

In addition there are e-mail addresses that are set up, so everyone can express themselves.

 "

The next step will be on May 5, in Dembeni, for a big discussion with the people of Mahora.

Five themes will be addressed in the debates: equal social rights, the security and migration challenge, the development of Mayotte, the strengthening of the departmental council and the integration of young people.
