Hamburg (dpa / lno) - Hamburg's Second Mayor Katharina Fegebank has defended the police against criticism for their use in left May Day demonstrations.

"I basically have confidence in the work of the police and I am glad that this May 1st weekend was much more peaceful here than in Berlin," said the Green politician on Monday.

Individual complaints will of course be followed up.

Everyone has the right to express their opinion and to protest against the politics in this country.

But "the use of force, for example attacking the police with iron bars, throwing bottles or setting off fireworks, is to be condemned in the strongest possible terms."

Left-wing demonstrators had a cat-and-mouse game with a large number of police officers in Hamburg on May 1. Water cannons were also used in front of the Rote Flora in the Schanzenviertel. Time and again, groups of up to 150 people who took to the streets despite a ban on gathering were arrested by the police. There were two arrests. A 17-year-old was provisionally arrested for attempting to hit emergency services with an iron bar. Nobody got hurt.

The Green Group leader in the Hamburg Parliament, Jenny Jasberg, tweeted after the minimal clashes between demonstrators and police compared to previous years: “I am ashamed that #Hamburg is again sending pictures of clashes between demonstrators and police, the questions to raise proportionality.

The reports from our demo observers will also have to be carefully evaluated. "

Later she tweeted several times in different versions that the police are doing a very important and good job and that violence, no matter who it originates from, cannot be tolerated and is never a legitimate means of expressing opinions.
