The federal government has canceled a deportation flight to Afghanistan planned for Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior said on Monday that the "return measure" had been postponed.

She referred to "logistical" problems caused by increased security measures in Kabul.

Refugee initiatives and the human rights organization Pro Asyl said the reason was the dramatic deterioration in the security situation in the country.

The ministry spokeswoman said that the Afghan authorities had increased security measures in Kabul since last Saturday.

This would have resulted in "logistical restrictions" for the authorities in the Afghan capital and also at the airport.

The "taking over of those who are to be returnees" is not possible until next Thursday.

Refugee initiatives and the organization “Pro Asyl” had previously referred to the dramatic deterioration in the security situation in the country.

The decisive factor for the decision was therefore not the danger for the migrants, but for the German police officers accompanying them.

After a break of several months due to the corona pandemic, deportation flights to Afghanistan were resumed in December 2020.

Since then there has been a collective deportation to Kabul at the beginning of each month.

Since the first such flight in December 2016, the federal and state governments have returned 1,035 men to Afghanistan.

Observers feared a deterioration in the security situation in Afghanistan around May 1st and thereafter.

The date marks the official start of the withdrawal of international troops from Afghanistan.

The approximately 10,000 remaining US and NATO soldiers are due to leave the country by September 11th.

The violence in the country continues despite ongoing peace talks between the militant Islamist Taliban and representatives of the Afghan Republic.
