Bremen (dpa) - The delivery of the refurbished naval training ship “Gorch Fock” planned for the end of May by the Lürssen shipyard is delayed until late summer due to Corona.

The shipyard announced this on Thursday in Bremen, without giving an exact date.

The work is delayed by "Covid-19-related staff losses in all companies involved in the project" and disruptions in the supply chains.

The navy as a customer had been informed.

"The additional costs incurred with the postponement will not be borne by the customer," said managing director Tim Wagner.

"As the responsible contractor, we will bear the financial impact."

He called it “extremely disappointing that external circumstances are now clearly setting us back on schedule”.

The general overhaul of the three-master, which began in December 2015, has repeatedly been delayed.

The costs have risen from a planned 10 million euros to 135 million euros.

In the opinion of the Federal Audit Office, this was partly due to a lack of preliminary planning for the renovation by the Navy.

Irregularities at a previous contractor, Elsflether Werft, also contributed to the disaster.

Most recently, however, the renovation was on schedule.

In March the barque was launched again at Lürssen.

The Navy was planning the first training voyage of the “Gorch Fock” in Scandinavian waters for July.

The German naval forces train their offspring in nautical craft on the barque.
