Many women have at one time or another experienced pain in the breasts during or after exercise.

Often it is due to the wrong type of sports bra that does not provide enough support.

At Portsmouth University, the support provided by different types of bras is being tested.

There, they have measured 93 percent stretching of the skin on women who exercise without a bra, which can not only create stretch marks but also risk damaging the ligaments that hold up the breasts.

Compression bra worst in test

- Cross-jumping causes a lot of chest movement.

The arms are up in the air while the body moves and then you hit the floor.

Cross-jumping is especially bad, says Joanna Wakefield-Scurr, professor of breast health, in the documentary The Truth About Home Exercise.

The documentary tests compression bras, enveloping bras and combination bras.

The worst result was the elastic compression bra, which reduced movements by 55 percent.

- The problem with that type is that they must be elastic enough to wear, says Joanna Wakefield-Scurr.
