Hannover / Stade (dpa / lni) - Over 5200 people in Lower Saxony have died in connection with Corona since the beginning of the pandemic - but their number is increasing more slowly.

The increase in deaths is "at a lower level," said a spokesman for the Lower Saxony state health office.

In January and February, 50 corona victims and more were counted nationwide per day, since the beginning of March there have been 20 - every day.

The vaccination campaign probably plays an important role in the development - in January the proportion of over 70-year-olds among the corona victims was 20 percent, currently it is 5 percent.

A total of 5260 people died of or with Covid-19 in Lower Saxony by Wednesday, the number of detected infections since the beginning of the pandemic rose to 233 766. Nationwide there were 82 280 corona deaths at the time.

In the crematoria, the situation is relaxed, the number of people who die from or with the coronavirus and are cremated is falling, said Svend-Jörk Sobolewski, the chairman of the Working Group of German Crematoria.

Sobolewski is the managing director of a company with crematoriums in Celle, Hildesheim, Stade, Cuxhaven, Quedlinburg and Schwerin.
