Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The state parliament passed a new water law for North Rhine-Westphalia on Thursday evening.

As a spokesman for the Environment Ministry reported, the members of the CDU, FDP and AfD voted for the bill.

The SPD and the Greens voted against it.

The law stipulates, among other things, the priority of the public drinking water supply over other groundwater uses such as agriculture or the beverage industry.

In future, natural resources may be extracted again in water protection areas.

Which rules should be laid down in an ordinance.

Environmental associations and the opposition parties SPD and Greens had criticized the amendment in advance and accused the state government of weakening water protection.
