Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - The Hessian FDP parliamentary group has received a lot of headwind for its proposal for a property tax reform in the state parliament.

The fee to be measured solely on the basis of the property area is at the expense of justice, said CDU MP Lena Arnoldt on Thursday in Wiesbaden.

The deputy chairman of the left-wing parliamentary group, Jan Schalauske, also criticized the FDP proposal for fueling social inequality.

After all, it makes a difference whether there is a villa or a hut on a property.

The FDP bill is based on a pure area model, as explained by the FDP parliamentary group spokeswoman Marion Schardt-Sauer.

"Our draft law offers the possibility of raising property tax from 2025 in a constitutionally secure, simple, unbureaucratic and transparent manner."

The property tax has to be re-regulated nationwide because the Federal Constitutional Court has declared the current system to be unconstitutional due to outdated values.

Property tax is paid by all property owners, tenants are asked to pay via the utility bill.

The SPD MP Kerstin Geis warned that the state government had not yet submitted a draft law.

"I would like to remind you that the property tax is the main source of income for cities and municipalities," she said.

Hesse's finance minister Michael Boddenberg (CDU) announced a year ago that the state wanted to recalculate property tax with its own model.

Accordingly, the location of the property should be decisive for the amount of the tax.

The AfD MP Bernd Vohl pleaded on Thursday to abolish the property tax.
