Berlin (dpa) - May 1st is a new and special challenge for the Berlin police this year.

"It will be a very special May 1st, which will also put us to the test," said police spokesman Thilo Cablitz on Thursday of the German Press Agency.

On the day there will not only be the usual large demonstration by left groups in the evening in Kreuzberg, but also an announced demonstration of so-called corona lateral thinkers in the afternoon and the night curfew due to corona infection protection.

Around 4,000 police officers are said to be on duty over the course of the holiday. In addition to numerous operational hundreds, there are also technical units, criminal police, traffic police and reconnaissance units, said Cablitz. How much support the Berlin police will receive from other federal states and from the federal police will not be known until Saturday. Police chief Barbara Slowik had told the "Berliner Morgenpost" that so far 36 hundreds were ready. This also includes many foreign units. The hundreds of Berlin police usually include around 80 police officers, in other federal states there are often more than 100.

Cablitz pointed out that demonstrations are generally not affected by the corona curfew in the evening.

The Infection Protection Act regulates this.

However, it should actually be demonstrations and not just an excuse to stay or celebrate on the streets.

If the streets in Kreuzberg or the parks are still full after 10 p.m., the police will take action because of the risk of infection.

People would be addressed individually or in groups, they would be asked to go home and larger numbers would be scattered.

In Kreuzberg, between Kottbusser Tor, Mariannenplatz and Görlitzer Park, the police imposed a ban on glass bottles for May 1st. The aim is to prevent possible attacks on police officers with throwing bottles and to limit alcohol consumption. After the radical left demonstration on May 1st, there had been violent attacks on the police and rioting for many years. The level of violence has decreased over the years.

The police are expecting up to 10,000 participants at the left-wing and radical left "demonstration on the revolutionary May Day", which will move from Hermannplatz in Neukölln to Oranienplatz in Kreuzberg from 6:00 pm.

Opponents and critics of the Corona restrictions as well as so-called lateral thinkers want to come together for a demonstration in Lichtenberg (Rathausstrasse) as early as noon from 12.00 p.m.

1000 participants are registered.

In the afternoon (3 p.m.) a satirical, colorful demonstration with a bicycle parade through the villa district of Grunewald is planned.

Officially, 2500 participants are listed here.
