Copenhagen (dpa) - According to the World Health Organization WHO, more people in Europe have now been completely vaccinated against Corona than have been proven to have been infected with the virus.

It was 462 days since the first infections were reported in the European region, said WHO Europe Regional Director Hans Kluge.

Since then, the virus has been detected in 5.5 percent of the entire European population, while seven percent have been fully vaccinated.

For the first time in two months, the number of new infections fell significantly last week.

However, the infection rates remained extremely high.

The WHO belongs to the Europe region in total more than 50 countries, including besides the EU for example Turkey as well as Russia and Ukraine.

So far, there have been around 51.3 million infections in these countries, including just under 1.37 million in the past seven days.

According to Kluge, around 215 million vaccine doses have been administered in the region to date.

An estimated 16 percent of the population received at least one dose.

Despite falling numbers of new infections, hospitalizations and deaths, the threat from the coronavirus remains, however, said Kluge at his regular press conference, which he held this time in Russian.

"The virus still has the potential to have devastating effects."
