Hanover (dpa / lni) - With dozens of red shoes on the steps of the state parliament in Hanover, members of all parliamentary groups protested against Turkey's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention.

This is an international agreement to protect women from violence;

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently announced his country's withdrawal from the agreement drawn up by the Council of Europe in 2011.

State Parliament President Gabriele Andretta and Health Minister Daniela Behrens (both SPD) took part in the protest.

Solidarity with women affected by violence in Germany was also called for.

During the campaign, each pair of shoes should represent a woman who died of violence, with the color red representing spilled blood. The form of action goes back to the Mexican artist Elina Chauvet, who launched the “Zapatos Rojos” (Red Shoes) project in 2009 and has already carried out actions with red shoes in various countries to target missing, abused, raped and murdered women recall.

"The violence against women, especially in the domestic environment, increased massively during the pandemic," warned the SPD member Thela Wernstedt.

“In Lower Saxony, too, an average of one woman is killed every week through intimate partner violence.

We do not want to and must not accept that. "

The Green parliamentarian Imke Byl also referred to the problematic situation of women in this country.

"Not only in Turkey, also in Germany, the state fails to protect its female citizens from domestic violence and femicides."

More investments in women's shelters and counseling facilities are needed.

"Working with perpetrators to break spirals of violence must also be possible in Corona times."
