Berlin (dpa) - On May 1, more than 5000 police officers are on duty in Berlin, mainly because of the many demonstrations.

This number relates to the planning status on Thursday and applies to the entire May 1st holiday, said police spokesman Thilo Cablitz of the German press agency.

The final number of the forces will be determined and published on Saturday.

Among the 5,000 police officers there are also many support workers from other federal states and from the federal police.

In addition, technical units, members of the criminal police, traffic police and reconnaissance units.

For the police, May 1st this year was a special challenge because the usual large demonstration by left groups in the evening in Kreuzberg would also include a demonstration of so-called corona lateral thinkers in the afternoon and the night curfew because of corona infection protection, it said.

The police are expecting up to 10,000 participants at the left-wing and radical left "demonstration on the revolutionary May Day", which will move from Hermannplatz in Neukölln to Oranienplatz in Kreuzberg from 6:00 pm.
