Shanghai (dpa) - According to calculations by market researchers, smartphone sales by the Chinese Huawei group have slumped by a good 60 percent as a result of the US sanctions.

The former global number two slipped in the past quarter with 18.6 million computer phones sold to seventh place, as the analysis company Canalys reported on Thursday.

According to Canalys calculations, Huawei sold 49 million smartphones in the first quarter of 2020.

Huawei had lost access to American technologies due to sanctions by the US government under ex-President Donald Trump.

This means that Huawei cannot sell new smartphones with Google services, among other things - which largely threw the company out of the market in the West.

In addition, Huawei parted with the cheaper Honor brand in order to at least save its business.

As in previous years, however, Samsung regained market leadership in the last quarter after Apple took the lead with fresh iPhones in the Christmas business.

According to Canalys figures, the South Korean group sold 76.5 million smartphones - 28 percent more than a year ago.

Samsung's market share remained at 22 percent.

Apple increased iPhone sales by 41 percent to 52.4 million devices - and expanded its market share from 14 to 15 percent.

The Chinese Huawei rivals grew even faster.

In third place, Xiaomi increased sales by 62 percent to 49 million smartphones.

Oppo follows with an increase of 60 percent to 37.6 million devices.

Overall, according to Canalys, the global smartphone market grew by 27 percent year-on-year to 374.4 million computer cell phones sold.
