After a relationship drama in the Hamburg district of Horn, the police arrested a 53-year-old.

The man is said to have killed his 40-year-old wife on Thursday night in the shared apartment.

When he was arrested, the suspect is said to have defended himself against the police.

The background to the act is still unclear.

The homicide squad has taken over the investigation.

According to information from WELT, the police were alerted by the suspected perpetrator's mother on Wednesday evening at around 7.30 p.m.

A little later, the police officers deployed discovered the body of the 40-year-old in the apartment on Weddestrasse.

Before that, however, they had to use force to gain access to the apartment because the 53-year-old refused to let them in.

According to a police spokesman, the man is said to have killed his wife by "using force on the neck".

In the course of the investigation, several knives were found in the apartment as possible weapons.

"The homicide commission took over the investigation on Wednesday evening and carried out extensive forensic investigation," said the spokesman.

"The crisis intervention team of the German Red Cross was also on duty and looked after the relatives affected by the crime."

Motive unknown

The man is said to have initially confided in his ex-wife after the fact.

This should then have informed the mother of the man.

The mother then called the police.

The couple are not supposed to have children.

The suspect was questioned by detectives that evening and is due to be brought before a judge today.

It is considered likely that he will be remanded in custody.

"The further investigation into the background of the crime continues," said the police spokesman.

A motif should not yet be known.
