Toulouse (dpa) - The aviation and defense company Airbus started 2021 in the black despite the business slump in the Corona crisis.

The bottom line was a profit of 362 million euros after a loss of 481 million euros a year earlier, as the company announced in Toulouse.

In day-to-day business, things went better than expected for the aircraft manufacturer.

At just under 10.5 billion euros, sales were two percent lower than in the first quarter of 2020. However, earnings before interest, taxes and special items (adjusted EBIT) increased from 281 million euros to 694 million euros.

Airbus thus exceeded the average expectations of analysts.

For the current year, CEO Guillaume Faury is sticking to his plan to deliver at least as many commercial aircraft as in the crisis year 2020. By then, he had handed over 566 aircraft to his customers.

The adjusted EBIT should continue to reach at least two billion euros.
