Dresden (dpa / sn) - In Saxony, significantly more insured persons received child sickness benefit from the Barmer health insurance company.

In the first quarter of this year, 17,892 days of child sickness benefit were approved in Saxony, almost 1,450 more than in the same period of the previous year, according to the analysis of the Barmer insured persons published on Thursday.

This includes both the days of absence due to the pandemic and the days on which the child was actually sick.

The pandemic-related children's sickness benefit introduced at the beginning of the year to look after the children was used by those insured against Barmer for a total of 7,042 days in the first quarter. «The child sickness benefit arrives. And that's good. After all, parents have to be supported in these times, ”said country manager Fabian Magerl. Mothers bear the brunt of the burden and stay at home to look after school and day-care children. The mothers would have received the new child sickness benefit on 4,322 days and the fathers on 2,720 days if the children were cared for due to the pandemic.

Due to corona-related restrictions at daycare centers and schools, the number of sick days per parent had already doubled from 10 to 20 this year, and from 20 to 40 days for single parents.

Parents can use them if they have to take time off from work for the children because they are not looked after in daycare or school.

The paid child sickness benefit amounts to 90 percent of net earnings.
