Berlin (dpa / bb) - After criticism and concerns from the responsible trade union Verdi, the front doors of the Berlin buses remain closed for the time being.

The reopening of the front entry, originally announced for the beginning of May, will be postponed, announced the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) on Thursday evening.

"Of course we take the concerns of our drivers very seriously and can understand the concerns in the times of the pandemic," said BVG boss Eva Kreienkamp.

Further measurements on the distribution of aerosols in the driver's area should now be carried out.

In March 2020, the front doors were closed and the driver's areas were separated with foil to prevent infections.

In the meantime, almost all buses around the driver's seat have so-called “spit protection” screens.

The BVG had therefore announced a few days ago that it would allow front entry again.

Many are worried about their health, the union said.
