London (dpa) - Even a first dose of the vaccines from Biontech and Astrazeneca can, according to a study, significantly reduce the risk of spreading the coronavirus in your own household.

The effects of the first vaccination reduce the risk of infection within households by 38 to 49 percent, according to Public Health England.

For her evaluation, she analyzed chains of infection in English households and, on this basis, calculated the likelihood of infection.

The experts compared those who tested positive for the corona virus who had received a vaccination at least three weeks previously with those who had not been vaccinated with corona.

According to the evaluation, those who had already been vaccinated infected members of their own household significantly less often: With Biontech, the probability of transmission after a vaccination was slightly lower than with Astrazeneca.

The evaluation by Public Health England provides further evidence that the vaccines used not only protect against severe Covid 19 diseases, but also reduce the risk of the virus being transmitted to others.

Earlier studies also gave cause for hope.

Public Health England included 57,000 contacts from 24,000 households in England in which a previously vaccinated person tested positive for the coronavirus, as well as one million contacts from unvaccinated people.

The study was not published in a specialist journal.
