Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Balloons filled with gas can endanger air traffic - the regional council (RP) Stuttgart has pointed out this fact.

It is forbidden to let such balloons go up at a distance of 1.5 kilometers from airfields.

"It should be noted that not only the major commercial airports in the state are defined as airfields within the meaning of the law, but also the other 200 landing sites and glider airfields in Baden-Württemberg," said a statement on Wednesday.

The ban also applies to over 80 helicopter landing pads at clinics in the southwest.

As these are mostly located in the vicinity of densely populated cities, the distance of 1.5 kilometers will quickly be undershot, the experts warn.

As the state aviation authority, the RP Stuttgart is responsible for the entire state of Baden-Württemberg and can allow exceptions to this ban.

"The prerequisite is that the children's balloons do not pose a threat to public safety and order," it says.

If it is planned that such balloons in the controlled airspace or over airfields en masse, "ie more than 500 pieces, or in bundles", approval must be obtained from the relevant tower.

Anyone who does not adhere to them is endangering air traffic.

"This represents an administrative offense that can be punished with a fine of up to 50,000 euros," the RP warned.
