Berlin (dpa) - After ten years of closure and five years of renovation, the Neue Nationalgalerie is once again a visible part of the Berlin cityscape.

This Thursday, the project management hands over the keys to the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, which is responsible for the State Museums.

The museum is scheduled to reopen on August 21, and open days are planned for the end of May.

The architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) created the building in the late 1960s as a museum for 20th century art.

At the handover of the keys, among others, Minister of State for Culture Monika Grütters, President of the Foundation Hermann Parzinger, the General Director of the State Museums, Michael Eissenhauer, the President of the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning, Petra Wesseler, the Head of the New National Gallery, Joachim Jäger, and Martin Reichert, partner at David Chipperfield Architects.

The team around the British star architect Chipperfield completely renovated and repaired the building for 140 million euros.

Right next to the New National Gallery, the 450 million euro Museum of the 20th Century by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron is currently being built.

Both buildings are to be connected underground.
