Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The first four weeks of the coming school year should be used to catch up on lessons that have been missed due to corona.

The education minister Bettina Martin (SPD) announced on Wednesday in the education committee of the state parliament.

"This time should serve to support the pupils to find their way back to a regular school day after the long period of restrictions, to determine the level of knowledge and to focus on the coming weeks and months," said the minister.

It is clear to everyone that coping with the consequences of the Corona crisis in schools must be long-term.

There is a whole package of measures.

Funding programs that have already been launched are to be extended.

For example, student teachers could continue to help in schools for a fee.

There will also be additional funding from private education providers, “both during school and during the holidays”.

There will be an additional program for students who have completely lost touch with the school in the lockdown.

"Youth welfare will also play an important role in this," emphasized the minister.

All this is not enough for the opposition left.

The four weeks planned for the beginning of the next school year were not enough “back and forth”.

"My group renews its proposal to extend the school year after the summer vacation until October in order to make up at least some of the missed classes," said the group leader Simone Oldenburg.
