Dresden (dpa / sn) - In addition to the shortage of skilled workers, the corona pandemic also exacerbates the search for junior staff in the hospitality industry in Saxony.

According to the Dehoga Hotel and Restaurant Association on Wednesday, 7.2 percent fewer apprenticeship contracts were signed nationwide in 2020, and the hotel industry was particularly affected.

Many companies continued their training despite the Corona crisis.

"The permanent lockdown of the industry, however, unsettles school leavers in the orientation phase," said Dehoga managing director Axel Klein.

The prospects for young professionals are excellent as soon as the situation normalizes again, he said.

The hospitality industry has a future, the Federal Employment Agency is reporting more vacancies than applicants for 2021.

"Those who begin training in the hospitality industry today have their job practically secure."

In the area of specialist in system catering, there are around five apprenticeships per applicant.

In view of the lower graduation rate - only around three quarters of the graduates passed the exams in 2020 - Dehoga is offering free digital seminars to get apprentices fit.

Due to the fact that the companies are closed, they lack practical experience and the deficit can hardly be made up.

According to Klein, around 900 contracts were concluded for the 2020/2021 apprenticeship year.
