Berlin (dpa / bb) - The anti-Israel Al-Kuds demonstration by Palestinian groups in Berlin will also be canceled this year.

The registration for May 8th had been withdrawn, said police spokesman Thilo Cablitz of the German press agency on Wednesday evening.

The legal policy spokesman for the FDP parliamentary group in the House of Representatives, Holger Krestel, welcomed the cancellation.

As a result, the capital escaped political damage, said the MP.

The demonstration registration was also withdrawn in 2020 due to the corona pandemic.

Interior Senator Andreas Geisel (SPD) tweeted at the time: "We will all be spared one of the most disgusting anti-Semitic events."

On Al-Kuds Day, which falls at the end of the Muslim month of Ramadan, Iran calls for the conquest of Jerusalem every year.

The background is the occupation of East Jerusalem by Israel during the Six Day War in 1967. Al-Kuds is the Arabic name for Jerusalem.

In 2019, up to 1,200 Al-Kuds demonstrators with conditions moved across Berlin's Kurfürstendamm.

There were also counter-protests.
