Dresden (dpa / sn) - Saxony remains a nationwide hotspot in the corona pandemic, but the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days has fallen slightly.

According to the overview from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the so-called seven-day incidence on Wednesday morning (as of 3:09 a.m.) was 210.3 - after 226.5 the day before.

It is currently only higher in Thuringia.

The Erzgebirgskreis is currently the worst hit nationwide with currently 375.3 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days. The district of Zwickau is directly behind with an incidence of 316.5, central Saxony ranks fourth on the nationwide list with a value of 307.5. After a slight increase, the city of Chemnitz is still just below the 300 mark. The city of Leipzig has the lowest value in Saxony with 112.8. The national average weekly incidence is 160.6.

The RKI reported 1562 new infections for Saxony compared to the previous day, the total number of laboratory-confirmed new infections since the outbreak of the pandemic in March 2020 increased to 258 178. Another 26 people died, the number of those verifiably dead with or from a Covid-19 infection increased to 9016. An estimated 223,800 infected people have so far recovered.
