A request opposed by the prefecture.

Romain Dupuy, a thirty-something who had killed with a knife two caregivers in Pau in 2004, asked, this Tuesday, his transfer from the Unit for difficult patients (UMD) to a conventional psychiatric hospital.

In 2008, Romain Dupuy, suffering from schizophrenia, had been found criminally not responsible for his acts and had not been tried for the stabbing murders at the Pau psychiatric hospital of a nursing assistant and a nurse he had beheaded.

Several expertises

During a hearing before the judge of freedoms and detention, who checks every six months that the internment regime for psychiatric hospital patients without consent is in line with their mental state, the new lawyers of Romain Dupuy, Mes Hélène Lecat and Serge Portelli, pleaded so that their client "leaves the UMD of Cadillac (Gironde) and that the judge maintains his full hospitalization but in an ordinary (psychiatric) department where he can develop positively", they explained.

They say they are based on several opinions and expertises, including those of the Cadillac hospital medical monitoring commission.

According to the lawyers, the Regional Health Agency and the prefecture wished at the hearing the maintenance of the person in UMD, as they have been doing for several years.

"He has only one will, that of reintegrating himself"

The prefecture explained that it was opposed to such an easing because there is a risk that he could escape from his new place of reception, less supervised than a UMD, and that there would be easier access to narcotics. that could destabilize it.

Messrs. Lecat and Portelli said they had proposed to the judge to appoint two new expert psychiatrists who had never examined their client.

They affirmed that the prefecture was based in particular on the opinion of an expert having three times concluded against Romain Dupuy these last ten years and whose "conclusions are known in advance".

According to his lawyers, Romain Dupuy spoke before the judge by videoconference: “He said he had made every possible and imaginable effort, that he had exemplary behavior and that he did not understand the relentlessness of the prefecture while it is making efforts ”.

“Today, Romain Dupuy is stabilized, very willing to follow his treatment.

He has only one will, that of reintegrating himself.

He does not respond to the image of usual UMD patients, he is not drugged on drugs, he expresses himself very well, ”explained Me Lecat.

The decision was reserved until Thursday, according to lawyers.
