Hanover (dpa / lni) - After a completely digital May 1, 2020, the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) is planning a mix of online and on-site rallies this year.

Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) will speak in Hildesheim.

Under the motto “Solidarity is the future”, face-to-face events are expected to take place in Hanover, Hildesheim, Göttingen and Braunschweig.

A total of 35 activities are planned in the country, as the DGB announced at a press conference on Tuesday.

"We are looking forward to May 1st and were able to save 50 percent of the events," said Torsten Hannig, managing director of the DGB region Lower Saxony-Mitte.

There will only be political rallies, demonstrations and a supporting program will be canceled due to the corona situation.

The event in Hanover is to start on Saturday at 11.00 a.m. and end at 12.30 p.m.

A meeting with so-called lateral thinkers should be avoided.

“Indeed, we are in regular contact with the assembly authorities.

We have been assured that there will be no confrontation, ”emphasized Hannig.

And the DGB district chief Mehrdad Payandeh added: “May 1st is our festival.

Politically, it should be about employers in the pandemic take responsibility for health protection and offer sufficient tests for employees.

"Many companies no longer train, we appeal to employers to invest in their future," said Payandeh.

The precarious situation of mini-jobbers and a fairer tax system would also be discussed.
