Prerow / Karlsruhe (dpa) - Ten years after commissioning the offshore wind farm Baltic 1 off the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula, the operator has drawn a positive balance.

“The wind yields and the technical availability are above our expectations,” says Stefanie Klumpp, spokeswoman for the Karlsruhe energy company EnBW.

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) put the wind farm with its 21 wind turbines into operation on May 2, 2011.

With just under 50 megawatts (MW), their output is theoretically sufficient to supply around 50,000 households with electricity.

With Baltic 2, EnBW is now operating a second, larger wind farm northeast of Rügen.

There had previously been years of legal tug-of-war about the wind farm.

There were no concerns about the fact that tourism would be damaged on the Darß because of the visible facilities.

Also, none of the many thousands of freighters that operate on the nearby Kadetrinne has gotten out of control and has a wind turbine damaged.

"But that doesn't mean that no accident is possible in the future," said Prerow's mayor René Roloff (non-party).
