Berlin (dpa) - With an exchange and education program, the cooperation between young professionals in African and German museums is to be strengthened.

"With the MuseumsLab we are creating a new, multilateral cooperation," said Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on Tuesday in Berlin.

"Politics, culture and civil society are teaming up to initiate joint further training and joint learning in the museum sector."

This is intended to advance the processing of German colonial history through cultural exchange.

According to the information, the program is aimed at young talent from museums in Germany and more than ten African countries.

In May there will initially be 25 participants, from next year on there should be 50 to 60 interested parties per year.

The aim is to focus on mutual learning between Africa and Europe.

The initiative represents an important step on the way to becoming a German agency for international museum cooperation, it said.

To this end, museums, scientific and cultural institutions come together.

TheMuseumsLab is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service, the Museum of Natural History in Berlin and the Berlin University of Technology and Economics in cooperation with the African network of consultants "The Advisors".
