Wiesbaden / Hamburg (dpa / lhe) - The state of Hesse has received the German Bicycle Prize for its concept of building a bicycle infrastructure.

The “Quality standards and model solutions for the Hessen Cycle Network” were awarded third place in the “Infrastructure” category at the National Cycle Congress in Hamburg, as the Ministry of Transport announced in Wiesbaden on Tuesday.

"The traffic turnaround is not just about more bike paths, but also about good and safe bike connections," said Transport Minister Tarek Al-Wazir (Greens).

In the pandemic, many people got back on their bikes and “noticed how fast and how well they are getting on with it.

However, they also notice that many cycle paths have to be modernized and expanded ».

The first two places in the Infrastructure category went to the projects “Pop-up Cycle Paths in Berlin-Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg” and “Bicycle Roads 2.0 in Münster”.

In 2020, the state of Hesse had already taken second and third place in the “Service” and “Communication” categories with the “Rediscover cycling” project and the “Better to school” program.
