Hanover (dpa / lni) - With an app to improve cycle paths, the Hanover region won the German Bicycle Prize in the service category.

The app called “Bike Citizens” collects anonymised GPS data on the driving behavior of cyclists in order to see which routes are preferred or avoided.

In this way, municipalities could better plan their cycle paths, it was said at the award ceremony on Tuesday in Berlin.

At the same time, the app would create incentives to switch from car to bike because cyclists are rewarded.

The German Bicycle Prize is a nationwide competition; prizes are awarded in several categories every year.

The initiators are the Federal Ministry of Transport and the working group for pedestrian and bicycle-friendly cities, municipalities and districts in North Rhine-Westphalia.

In addition to the app, a second contribution from Lower Saxony was awarded.

The project "Consideration opens the way!"

of the district and rural people of Göttingen received second place in the communication category.

The project uses signs on rural roads to promote mutual understanding between farmers and cyclists.

More than 300 such signs have already been set up in the field markers.
