Hamburg (dpa / lno) - The historic warehouse district of Hamburg is one of the most famous sights of the Hanseatic city and a magnet for locals and tourists.

The illumination, which lets the red brick warehouse and office buildings glow in a soft light in the evenings, has been particularly popular for 20 years.

This was made possible by the Licht-Kunst-Speicherstadt association.

It was founded in 2001 by companies and private individuals in a joint initiative with the Senate and Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA).

"With the founding of the association exactly 20 years ago, this extraordinary place was finally put into perspective," said Senator for Culture Carsten Brosda (SPD).

The association has invested more than one million euros in this in recent years.

Under the artistic direction of Michael Batz, further buildings in the Speicherstadt are to be illuminated by 2025, for the 10th anniversary of the UNESCO World Heritage status.

In the meantime, the light art project - around 1200 lights are installed on the storage blocks and bridges - is operated in a completely climate-neutral manner.
