The Saxony-Anhalt AfD member of the state parliament Ulrich Siegmund and two of his election workers were attacked and injured in Stendal on Sunday evening.

Two men attacked her with fist blows while hanging up election posters in the city, the Stendal police station announced on Monday.

Shortly afterwards, two suspects were found nearby.

Investigations into bodily harm had been initiated against a 26-year-old from Magdeburg and a 22-year-old man from the Niedere Börde.

According to the AfD regional association, Siegmund suffered a bruise on his face and a wound on his hand.

One of his helpers had to be treated in hospital for a laceration on his face.

Siegmund said it was shocking "how unscrupulous and aggressive the attack was".

It is clear that "we will not be intimidated by such cowardly and devious attacks," he said.

A new state parliament will be elected on June 6th in Saxony-Anhalt.

In the current state parliament, the AfD is the largest opposition faction.

According to a recent survey on behalf of the MDR, the party would have to reckon with a drop in votes of a good four percentage points compared to 2016 and would get around 20 percent approval.
