25 April 2021 More than 20 meters into an ice crack, two climbers ended up in a crevasse on the western side of Breithorn (Champoluc) in the Monte Rosa massif.

The accident occurred at 4,100 meters above sea level and was reported just before 2pm. One of the two mountaineers fell to a depth of about 20 meters, the other further down into an ice crack.

These are two Swiss nationals, a 23-year-old man and woman.

They were saved thanks to the immediate intervention of the Valdostano Alpine Rescue and the Guardia di Finanza with men from the Sagf (Alpine Rescue of the Guardia di Finanza) of Cervinia, with a helicopter and a crew doctor who allowed the two mountaineers to recover from the icy crevasse.

The two Swiss mountaineers rescued on western Breithorn were taken to the Emergency Department of the Parini Hospital in Aosta. Their conditions - according to reports from the health authorities - do not cause concern.
