Hollywood (dpa) - As if everyone was looking forward to this one moment, the designers, the stylists, the stars anyway.

Even if the pandemic meant that this year's Academy Awards had to take place on a much smaller scale, there was little reluctance to feel in fashion.

Strong colors, sometimes opulent shapes and unusual combinations shaped the image - for women, but also for men. The opposite pole: clear white. Maybe a tribute to the medical staff? In advance, the organizers had issued a written warning to refrain from casual looks. The worry was probably too great that the house suit would meanwhile be the new evening dress. The fact that some stars even appeared in gold made them sparkle like an Oscar.

Here are some of the fashionable tops and flops of this year's Oscar night:

- Top: Regina King opened the ceremony - and she did it with broad shoulders. If you want, you can read a social statement in it: We (women, non-white) are gaining more space in Hollywood.

- Top: This is pure glamor! Carey Mulligan in a gold bustier robe with a wide skirt by Valentino.

- Flop: In 2001 Björk caused the biggest fashion flop in Oscar history with her swan dress. Since then, every woman who steps into lush white feathers has had to live with this comparison. Like Laura Dern now. Even if their combination with the black stand-up collar top was much more elegant.

- Great: The really big wow factor this time comes from Giorgio Armani. He dressed Amanda Seyfried in a bright red tulle robe with a deep V-neck. We missed the red carpet for appearances like this.

- Flop: Because everyone only had eyes for Halle Berry's new bob hairstyle, they missed the bead of fabric on their dress. Which unfortunately takes away the sophistication of the Dolce & Gabbana design.

- Top: The singer Tiara Thomas came in a very stylish white pants suit. That is a «top». And a second for how self-determined she presents her very deep cleavage.

- Flop: If the first association is "armbands", a dress is lost for any constructive criticism of style. Angela Bassett has to live with that.

- Top: How this chiffon dress by Gucci with floral print in delicate tones caressed the baby bump of Oscar winner (Best Original Screenplay) Emerald Fennell: simply beautiful.

- Top: Crocs went through an amazing development, from the ugly style sin to the trend shoe. And now the holey slippers have even made it onto the red carpet, in a golden version on the feet of the music producer Questlove.

- Flop: Many will celebrate it as a brave break with convention. But because white sneakers have become so ubiquitous, director Chloé Zhao would have better done without them on this occasion. She won an Oscar anyway.

- Top: Leslie Odom Jr. didn't get an Oscar, but at least looked like one: in his double-breasted Brioni suit. Made from a jacquard fabric woven with real gold threads, which is otherwise allegedly only used in the Vatican.

- Flop: Men and pink are always a tricky combination.

Men completely in pink are an impertinence.

Even if Versace is on the label.

Sorry Colman Domingo.

- Top: The yellow and black tuxedos (Dolce & Gabbana) by Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe would have had a good chance of a place in the “flop” ranking.

But because the names of people killed by the police were embroidered on the inside of the jacket, there is a "top" after all.
