Frankfurt (Oder) (dpa / bb) - Brandenburg fruit growers do not have to worry very much about the harvest at the moment after the partly cool April weather in Brandenburg.

"The sweet cherry trees are white," said Andreas Jende from the Berlin-Brandenburg Horticultural Association.

Regionally, however, some flowers could not have survived the frosty night temperatures.

That is expected.

"But we hope that everything continues to go well," he said.

On the orchard of Thomas Bröcker, managing director of the apple gallery fruit growing company at the gates of Frankfurt (Oder), a light smell of marzipan wafts through the air.

"That's the characteristic scent of sweet cherry blossoms," he said.

At first glance, a small green point can be seen in the flowers: the fertilized pistil.

The future cherry will develop from this.

Brocker regards 20 percent damage to flowers as still normal.

"In some years bad weather resulted in 70 to 80 percent fewer flowers," said the fruit grower.

The year 2019 should not be forgotten, when severe spring frosts caused a total failure of the fruit harvest.

It shouldn't get too cold now, said the managing director of the horticultural association.

During the day temperatures between 5 and 9 degrees would be ideal.

Then bees, bumblebees and other insects would also fly and fulfill their “fertilization mission”.

There are 30,000 trees on the Bröcker farm.

After the sweet cherries, which he grows in around twelve varieties, the apple trees bloom.

There he offers 120 varieties.

Morello cherries, apricots and plums are added later.

He sells around a fifth of his harvest himself, the rest goes through the cooperative to retailers in the Berlin and Brandenburg region.
